Rocked by a close call

Fears growing after bus window smashed

- HELEN KEMPTON

A TASMANIAN bus company fears a spate of rock-throwing incidents will result in injury, with the latest involving a rock that came through a window and endangered the driver and high school students on board.

Operators of Tasmania’s Own Redline said the incident on Thursday night involved a bus that was carrying a number of school students.

A rock was thrown at the side of the bus at Dodges Ferry about 7pm. It smashed through the window and landed close to passengers.

Redline’s southern operations manager Andrew Grzinic said the rock was thrown on Carlton Beach Road at Dodges Ferry, near the Raprinner Street intersection.

“Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident, with a similar attack in recent weeks in Cambridge and Warrane,” Mr Grzinic said.

“We were lucky this time, but significant injuries could result in prosecution of those responsible.”

The incident has been reported to police and dashcam footage has been provided to help identify those responsible.

Tasmania Police is seeking public information.

“Thankfully no one was injured, but there was a very real potential for commuters and motorists to have been seriously injured,” a police spokesman said.

“These types of incidents cause significant distress to the community.”

Anyone with information on suspicious activity in the vicinity of Tarana Street or Arnott Street can contact Tasmania Police on 131 444.
