Successful raid from a talented foursome

- MITCH COHEN

THEY came, they saw and they conquered.

The internationals were again the dominant force in the Melbourne Cup when the first four over the line were all trained abroad.

The Irish galloper Twilight Payment delivered at Flemington to provide trainer Joseph O’Brien with his second Cup and jockey Jye McNeill with his maiden success.

Twilight Payment narrowly beat fellow Irish galloper Tiger Moth, while Britain’s Prince Of Arran flashed home for third.

Kiwi visitor The Chosen One completed the first four.

TWILIGHT PAYMENT ( 1ST) What a tough horse. McNeil gave the Lloyd Williamsowned galloper a peach of a ride after jumping from a tricky draw in barrier 12 and leading at the finishing post the first time. McNeil ensured it was a true staying test when he kicked it up a gear at the 1000m. Twilight Payment kept finding over the concluding stages.

TIGER MOTH ( 2ND) He was given every chance by jockey Kerrin McEvoy and just found one better on the day. McEvoy went forward from the wide alley and tracked Twilight Payment but he couldn’t get past him. In his fifth run, he was a Melbourne Cup runner- up.

PRINCE OF ARRAN ( 3RD) He was outstanding again. The Charlie Fellowes- trained stayer had his third attempt in “the race that stops a nation” and was unlucky not to finally break through. He got caught in traffic at the wrong time.

THE CHOSEN ONE ( 4TH) Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman’s Kiwi gun backed up his Caulfield Cup placing with another stellar display. He looked like he might challenge the winner at the furlong pole before peaking on his run late.
