Cup titans slug it out

- DAN THURLEY

THE two most decorated clubs in Lakoseljac Cup history will go face-to-face today in what is sure to be a recordbreaking affair.

The Olympia Warriors and the Glenorchy Knights have a rich history of Lakoseljac Cup victories, with each club winning the competition a record seventimes.

James Sherman believes adding an eighth victory would be an important step forward for his Knights side.

“To be in cup finals is really important and the culture of the club should be about getting into cup finals and winning, ”he said.

“We come into a cup final – a Lakoseljac Cup final, which is something a little bit extra for us – full of confidence and in a good position. (Olympia Warriors) are a very good side. They have some very good players. We’ re going to respect them by giving them our best… and we’ re nice and prepared .”

The Warriors will have eyes on all three games today as their women, men and under 20s all fight it out in Statewide Cup finals.

“We’re really lucky to have all three teams in ,” said men’ s coach Rob Clarke earlier this week. “This is a great thing for the club. “All the coaches and support staff have been great all year, so I guess it’s a reward.”

The Warriors had a disappointing league season in which they finished fifth ,11 points behind the second-placed Knights. They have, however, produced some of their best results this season in the cup, and Clarke believes his side will have to continue that good form to overcome a difficult Knights team.

“They’ve got a really good defence so they’ re really hard to score against so that’s going to be our focus,” Clarke said. “We have to make sure that we’re much better defensively than we have been in the past and that’ s not easy, you can’ t just change that overnight. “We’ ll need a bit of luck.

“I’m confident we can score up the other end but we just need a bit of luck defensively.”
