GIVE A MINUTE AND PAUSE TO REMEMBER
TAKING time to reflect on the sacrifices made to keep our country safe is a daily act for Vietnam veteran Brian McKenzie.
But on Remembrance Day, he hopes all Tasmanians will join him in paying respect to all Australians who have died or suffered in wars and armed conflicts.
“It’s a day where, personally, I remember mates that didn’t come home,” Mr McKenzie said. “We need to remember people in particular who gave their lives for their country.”
He said it was also an opportunity to remind veterans and their families that support was available.
“I volunteer as an advocate for younger veterans through RSL Tasmania and I know the day is important to them,” he said. “At the end of the day, when you go and fight in a war, part of the process is that you kill other human beings. Sometimes that troubles people, and people are in a situation where they need to get back into society.”
RSL Tasmania president Robert Dick said just like Anzac Day, Remembrance Day services would look a little different this year.
A commemorative service will take place at the Hobart Cenotaph, however due to COVID- 19 restrictions it is not a public event.
“Whether you’re in your office or working from home, attending an RSL sub- branch event or livestreaming a service, reciting The Ode personally or listening to a recording from the Remember to Remember website, please take a minute at 11am to pause, reflect and remember,” Mr Dick said. “Remember … particularly those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
