A SENSE OF CALM AND WELLBEING BY ANY STRETCH

- MERYL NAIDOO

KEEPING it fun, friendly and real with a warm, special space where people feel welcome and cared for is the key to a yoga studio, a Hobart studio owner says.

Trish May has been in the health and fitness industry for 17 years.

“I have lost count of how many classes I have taught, from gyms, to schools, sporting clubs and aged- care nursing homes to name a few,” Ms May said.

“I’ve met so many wonderful people along the way and I’m always learning.”

When Alceme yoga studio went into administration last year she took over the lease with her husband David Lienert and reopened. Both are accountants.

With many Tasmanians living busy and often stressful lifestyles, she has some tips for those looking to improve their health.

“Movement is medicine, we need to keep active in order to have balance,” Ms May said.

“Strength, flexibility and balance help to keep the body in check. Adding a focus on our breath while practising has so many benefits for the mind and body. “Yoga encompasses all that, and more.” Ms May’s impeccably styled and light- filled space offers many forms of yoga, meditation, pilates and fitness. She said the calm space catered for all ages and stages.

“We are blessed with incredibly amazing teachers and members,” she said.

“COVID made us reassess a lot of things. By reducing our price to $ 19.95 per week for unlimited classes, we want everyone to feel welcome and safe, to make movement part of their everyday and not feel locked in with contracts and the like.

“It’s such a beautiful space, we want to share that with everyone.”

Yoga has been used for physical and mental wellbeing for centuries. The Mercury is continuing our Best of Tasmania series by calling for nominations to find the state’s best yoga studio. Place your vote at www. themercury. com. au
