An elite field will tee off Saturday in the men’s and women’s Amateur Championship of Tasmania.

Entries for the 108th staging of the state’s most esteemed amateur golf event have seen 64 competitors enter to chase the prestigious titles.

Defending champion Will Florimo, 21, from Queensland is a firm favourite for the men’s championship over 72- holes of stroke play at Mowbray Golf Club, the scene of last year’s win.

Prospect Vale Golf Club member and 2019 runner- up Ryan Thomas will be looking to go one better this year.

The 19- year- old is one of a number of local hopefuls who will be fighting to keep the title on home soil.

Other Tasmanians to look out for include Royal Hobart’s Joey Bower, Tasmania’s Mark Schulze and Launceston’s Mitch Van Noord. Prospect Vale’s young gun Ronan Filgate and Burnie Golf Club’s Brayden Field will also be out to prove their mettle.

Louis Dobbelaar, a plus six handicapper from Brookwater Golf Club in Queensland, is one of 23 mainland competitors contesting the event.

Other mainland competitors keen to capture Tasmania’s top prize include Jeremy Fuchs from New South Wales and Frederick Cassell of South Australia.

The women’s championship will also be keenly contested and will see Royal Hobart Golf Club junior Hallie Meaburn start favourite.

Standing in the 17- year- old’s path will be fellow state team member Mackenzie Wilson from the Tasmania Golf Club. Challenges are also expected from local member Jorjah Bailey and Prospect Vale’s Lily Caelli.

The event concludes next Monday with the final 18- holes and the crowning of Tasmania’s men’s and women’s amateur champions.

Meanwhile, Tasmania’s best senior golfers will tee off for the men’s and women’s Tasmanian Senior Masters Championship at Mowbray.
