SWEET SURPRISES IN NEW PREMIUM CBD HOTEL

- JESSICA HOWARD

SWEET treats and Tasmanian produce will be front and centre at one of Hobart’s newest hotels when it opens its doors early next year.

Operators had been tightlipped with details about the hotel until Tuesday when Accor officially said it had joined with Singaporeanbased global hospitality group, Global Premium Hotels, in signing a hotel management agreement to open the Movenpick Hotel Hobart in the Elizabeth Street bus mall in mid- January 2021.

Designed by local firm Jaws Architects, the hotel will feature 215 rooms and six suites with a restaurant and meeting facilities.

Coming to Tasmania from a role in Auckland, hotel general manager Jeremy Healy said the pandemic had not had too much of an impact on the timeline of construction and opening.

Mr Healy said there were some great opportunities for the industry as it recovered from the COVID- 19.

“There’s 10 million Australians that want to travel in 2021 and they have to do it domestically,” he said.

“I think weekends will be strong and midweek will remain tough, but the advantage we have is we’re a new brand to the region so there’s excitement around that.”

The Movenpick will be offering guests and visitors Italian cuisine as well as locally inspired signature dishes at its Tesoro Modern Italian resimpacts of taurant. While the restaurant is still under construction, executive chef Trent Whelan was able to give some hints into what patrons will be able to expect from the venue.

“I’ve been down here many times for holidays over the years and have come to realise it really is the food bowl to the mainland,” he said.

“To have this world- class produce at your fingertips makes my work so much easier. Tasmania is my paradise.”

The former executive chef and food and beverage manager at the Novotel Melbourne South Wharf said local cheeses and meats would be the hero of the restaurant, with freshly made pasta, pizza and focaccia every service.

A la carte breakfast will be available until 4pm every day, with a signature dish of lobster benedict.

Since the announcement on Tuesday of the hotel’s opening, there has been a lot of buzz about the ‘ chocolate hour’.
