Flying Lions chase berth in T20 final

- ADAM SMITH

UNIVERSITY is a victory away from securing a berth in the first final of the CTPL season but the side remains focused on the bigger picture.

The Lions, unbeaten in T20, entered the Christmas break on the back of an eight-match winning streak to snatch top place on the ladder.

They return to action Saturday in the last of the “gala” T20 days, with matches against South Hobart-Sandy Bay in the morning and New Town later on their home turf.

One win will guarantee a place in the T20 decider, but Harrison said his players could not be distracted.

“It is exciting to be in that space but certainly we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, we want to look at it as another two games in the whole picture of the season,” Harrison said.

“If you play well in certain rounds and formats then the outcome from that is you might get an opportunity to play off in a final. We haven’t always had things all our own way but what we have done is found a way to win.”

Four other teams remain in contention for the T20 final, with North Hobart (seven points) one behind Uni, the Sharks and Lindisfarne tied with five points and Greater Northern a further point back on four.

Results at UTAS Stadium will ultimately end up deciding the final ladder, with the Demons and Lightning heading north to meet the Raiders.

“We have found the back to backs [T20 games] have worked for us because we are four and zip, but I think we are looking forward to this week probably just because of what is in front of us,” Harrison said.

Glenorchy, Clarence and Kingborough will fight out the bottom third of the T20 ladder at KGV.
