DEFENDING CHAMPIONS PROVE TOO GOOD IN STATE TRIPLES DECIDER

THE first of the Bowls Tasmania State Championsh­ips concluded at Beltana last Wednesday after four days of superb bowls, with about 450 competitor­s from all over Tasmania competing.

Sims by eight shots men’s triples final

In the women’s triples final Rebecca Van Asch, Deb Lee and Jess McMullen outclassed Lauren Banks, Glenda Fielding and Tracey Little winning easily by 14 shots.

Buckingham’s Isaac Maughan and Christine Thompson took out the mixed pairs title, defeating Longford’s Mark Strochnett­er and Invermay’s Kim Saunders by three in the shots. In the bowling arm singles final, Glenorchy City’s Noel Buckingham defeated Michael Shingles by 10 shots.

In a nailbiting finish, Trevallyn’s Joe Reissig and Geoff Buchanan took out the bowling arm pairs final beating South Burnie’s John Burley and Chris Sturzaker.

Claremont’s Adam Taylor and Brighton’s Riley Davie teamed up and easily defeated Dylan Samphier and Ryan

Ferguson by 31 shots in the junior boys’ pairs championsh­ip final.

In the junior boys’ singles final, Beltana’s Seth Harper raced away to a 12-shot lead and then withstood a spirited fightback from Adam Taylor to win by four shots. In the girls singles final Trevallyn’s Chloe Collins was too good for Hollie Bond winning by 19 shots.

The final week of the Bowls Tasmania State Championsh­ips

will be held in Launceston from March 6-12 and will include men’s and women’s open and B grade singles, pairs and fours championsh­ips and bowlers with disability championsh­ips.

Bowls Tasmania South DL Reid 2020-21 Women’s Singles Championsh­ips commenced last Friday at St John’s Park and Howrah in cold and wet conditions with two sections unable to be completed until yesterday due to heavy rain in the afternoon.

Sectional winners were Barb Biernacki, Denise Tanner, Lyn Triffitt, Trudy Davis, Janet Rutherford, Crystal Brooks, Maree Morgan, Deb Stearnes, Liz Sweeney, Wendy Gray, Daphne Roberts Jeanette Lane and Laura Best.

Semi-finals and the grand final will be played at St John’s Park on Friday from 9am.
