MASCOT JUMPS TO SUPPORT

- ADAM SMITH

THE JackJumpers have announced their first signing ahead of the 2021-22 NBL season — but his job description will revolve around entertainment instead of scoring baskets.

Tasmania’s mascot, Jack the Jumper, has been unveiled by the league’s newest club.

Chief executive Simon Brookhouse said the role of the mascot would be vital as the franchise begins its brand activation and builds momentum into its inaugural season later this year.

“It’s really important, it’s part of our brand, for us this is a really momentous occasion to actually have our mascot, and it gives us a little bit more recognition,” Mr Brookhouse said.

“The key to what we do is that we’re an excitement package. We’re not just about basketball, and things like the mascot and things like the oncourt entertainment during the breaks is really important.

“It builds that family-friendly environment that we want. We want people to go away having had a good time and if Jack can help do that we’re really proud of that.”

The JackJumpers have advertised for someone to fill the role permanently, with several qualities required.

“We want them to be cheeky, entertaining, acrobatic … but the most important thing for us is that someone’s going to have a bit of fun and really enjoy being part of the program.”

On court preparations are about to ramp up, with coach Scott Roth to arrive in the state soon.

Mr Brookhouse said scouting the free agent market had already begun, while Roth will also head back to Melbourne to canvas the NBL Cup when it kicks off later in the month.

“He’s already looking to recruit players … there’s no one in particular at the moment. I’ve said before there’s a number of uncontracted players that he will talk to, but he’ll also come in here and test out the Tasmanian talent.”
