Care service driving on

- JAMES KITTO

A TASMANIAN disability support organisation insists its practices will not be interrupted after a fleet of its vehicles was stolen during a latenight raid.

Community Transport Services Tasmania’s Mowbray depot on Tuesday night was targeted by thieves who stole six vehicles, prompting a police investigation.

The not-for-profit organisation, which is supported by more than 300 volunteer drivers across the state, provides delivery assistance for elderly Tasmanians and those living with a disability.

As of Thursday afternoon four of the six stolen vehicles were recovered by police and returned to the organisation.

CTST chief executive Lyndon Stevenson said the disability support service had been inundated with well-wishes following the theft.

“I thank the community for their many messages of support this week and Tasmania Police for its stellar efforts in recovering four vehicles so quickly,” he said. “With police handling the ongoing investigation, our focus now is on ensuring our clients receive the transport they need.”

Mr Stevenson said client transport support had not waned following the incident.

“CTST wants to reassure all of our valued passengers and their families that we have put immediate plans into action to ensure transport service continues uninterrupted,” he said.

Tasmania Police Detective Inspector Craig Fox described the theft at the disability support organisation as “extremely disappointing”.

He said the recovered vehicles were returned to CTST in “good condition” at Kings Meadows and Youngtown.

“We received public calls about the location of these vehicles and we encourage anyone who sees cars around the town, to please call police,” he said.
