A BLUE-tongue lizard is synonymous with Australia and researchers believe they have found its smaller ancestor.

Palaeontologists unearthed deposits of a tiny skink while sifting through a big salt lake in South Australia. The new species is the oldest skink fossil ever found in Australia, at 25 million years old. It has been confirmed as a new species called Proegernia mikebulli.

Remains of prehistoric fish, platypus, dolphins and crocodilians were also found.

FAST-FOOD giant Domino’s delivered three pizzas a second during the global lockdown last year, helping boost firsthalf profit by a third.

Brisbane-based Domino’s reported a 32.8 per cent increase in half-yearly profit to $96.2m on a 16.5 per cent hike in sales to $1.84bn.

The company, with outlets in Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, cooked 209 million pizzas last year.

The company said it would boost investment in artificial intelligence that predicted customers’ behaviour online, as well as delivery technologies including robots and drones.

Domino’s chief executive Don Meij said COVID-19 had meant online sales accounted for the lion’s share of the growth.

WITH other members of our family, we have been friends of the orange-bellied parrot for a long time . At both Birchs Inlet and Melaleuca we have watched in despair as numbers dwindled each year despite mighty efforts. Now we hear that scores of eggs have hatched at Melaleuca. We can imagine the chaos of trying to record all those juvenilles at the feeding tables!

Congratulations to the dedicated professionals and volunteers whose hard work over many years has achieved this fantastic result. A standing ovation is in order!
