TALENTED TEEN CLAIMS FIRST NORTH WEST TITLE

STANLEY Golf Club member Jack Lakin captured his first men’s North West Championsh­ip at Devonport on the weekend.

The 19-year-old Tasmanian High Performanc­e Squad member shot rounds of 70 and 69 to finish the 36-hole event with a one-under-par total of 139. Wynyard Golf Club member Ben Kalbfell placed second on one-overpar with scores of 72 and 69, a one-over total of 141, while local member Joel Lunson rounded out the top three in the men’s division on sevenover-par with scores of 74 and 73, a total of 147.

Meanwhile, Launceston teenager Jorjah Bailey was getting busy capturing the correspond­ing women’s North West title, defeating Smithton Golf Club’s Jackie Poke 5 & 4 in the 36-hole match play final.

In other matches, Launceston Golf Club’s Sally Gibb defeated local member Kylie Flack 2-up to capture the consolatio­n title.

St Helens’ Jo Williams defeated Thirlstane member Suzanne Sykes 2 & 1 in division two and St Helens’ Dianne Chellew beat Helen Krawczyk 7 & 6 in division three. The boys’ championsh­ip was won by Tasmania Golf Club’s Dylan Backhouse on eightover, after rounds of 75 and 73.

Royal Hobart Golf Club junior Hunter Gillard placed second behind Backhouse.

Bailey won the girl’s 36hole title with scores of 79 and 75, a six-over-par total of 154.

Wynyard golfer John Kalbfell won the men’s Senior North West title and Lakin picked up the colts title.

Devonport Golf Club’s Lain Thorn won the women’s Senior North West title with scores of 84 and 83.

THE first round of Southern Pennant was conducted last weekend, with the commenceme­nt of division one delayed until March 21.
