BOWLS SOUTH JUNIORS DO ENOUGH ON LAST DAY TO CLAIM CHALLENGE
AFTER dominating the first four rounds of the Bowls Tasmania Junior State Wide Challenge, Bowls South juniors had a mixed day in the final two rounds at the Longford Bowls Club on Sunday.
The best junior boys and girls bowlers from the south, north and north-west were pitted against each other in fours, triples, pairs and singles.
Containing a mix of experienced and new players, Bowls South exceeded expectations this season, with some outstanding bowls being played and were crowned overall champions.
In the morning triples games, Bowls South won and lost a game, with Isaac Maughan, Tyler Forsyth and Lily Bricknell defeating Bowls North West’s Kolbie Thurley, Jonty Hayes and Holly Bonde by five shots, while Riley Davey, Brock Bricknell and Eli Sutton were easily defeated by Bowls North’s Henry Hollingsworth, Chloe Collins and Blake Jones by 36 shots.
In the pairs, Bowls South’s Lucas Howell and Sebastian Triffett comfortably beat Bowls North’s Lachlan Strochnetter and James Jones by 17 shots, while Adam Taylor and Miley Sutton were narrowly defeated by Bowls North’s Lachlan Thurley and Jordyn Aitken, by four shots.
In the afternoon fours games, Bowls South’s Maughan, Forsyth, Miley Sutton and Xavier Triffett lost by one shot to Bowls North West, while Howell, Davey, Eli Sutton and Sebastian Triffett lost to Bowls North by four shots.
Bowls South won both its singles games, with Brock Bricknell defeating Fletcher Felmingham by nine shots and Adam Taylor accounting for Ethan Lamprey by 16 shots. THE Bowls Tasmania’s Seniors Fours and Pairs Championships were played on the North West Coast this week.
In the men’s fours championships, Wayne Willcox, Wayne Manson, Peter French and Trevor Docking easily won the grand final against Shane Young, Rod Turner, Stef Graf and Roger Dale by 14 shots. In the semi-finals, Willcox defeated K. White by eight shots and Young beat Joe Simpson by one shot.
In the women’s fours championships, Sheryl Watt, Madge Strochnetter, Barbara Smith and Maggie Campbell were too good for Noelene Purton, Barbara Hill, Barbara Gleeson and M. Bakes, winning by 12 shots. In the semi-finals, Watts beat Annette Yaxley by 11 shots and Purton defeated Maxine Monson by two shots.
