WHAT THE REPORT FOUND
Tasmania Police received four information reports from third parties and a criminal complaint from a victim about James Griffin between 2009 and 2019.
2009 Information Report: from an interstate agency alleging Griffin took photographs of children in a public place. RESULT: Search warrant executed, no evidence of an offence uncovered.
2011 Information Report: Child and Family Services provides Tasmania Police with information on historical sexual assaults on two unidentified victims.
RESULT: TasPol requested further information, which was not provided.
2013 Information Report: Concerns raised with police about “inappropriate touching and grooming behaviour by Griffin”.
RESULT: Referred to Child and Family Services. Griffin and the alleged victim were both spoken to by CFS. Both denied inappropriate behaviour. File closed.
2015 Information Report: Australian Federal Police provide Tasmania Police with information about Griffin and sexual offending and child exploitation material. RESULT: “Deficiencies in the management of this information by Tasmania Police have been identified and are the subject of a current Professional Standards investigation.”
2019 criminal complaint: Received by Tasmania Police in May. RESULT: Griffin’s working with vulnerable children accreditation suspended in late July. Charges laid in October, Griffin died soon afterwards. Review deems conduct of investigation was appropriate.
