WHAT THE REPORT FOUND

Tasmania Police received four informatio­n reports from third parties and a criminal complaint from a victim about James Griffin between 2009 and 2019.

2009 Informatio­n Report: from an interstate agency alleging Griffin took photograph­s of children in a public place. RESULT: Search warrant executed, no evidence of an offence uncovered.

2011 Informatio­n Report: Child and Family Services provides Tasmania Police with informatio­n on historical sexual assaults on two unidentifi­ed victims.

RESULT: TasPol requested further informatio­n, which was not provided.

2013 Informatio­n Report: Concerns raised with police about “inappropri­ate touching and grooming behaviour by Griffin”.

RESULT: Referred to Child and Family Services. Griffin and the alleged victim were both spoken to by CFS. Both denied inappropri­ate behaviour. File closed.

2015 Informatio­n Report: Australian Federal Police provide Tasmania Police with informatio­n about Griffin and sexual offending and child exploitati­on material. RESULT: “Deficienci­es in the management of this informatio­n by Tasmania Police have been identified and are the subject of a current Profession­al Standards investigat­ion.”

2019 criminal complaint: Received by Tasmania Police in May. RESULT: Griffin’s working with vulnerable children accreditat­ion suspended in late July. Charges laid in October, Griffin died soon afterwards. Review deems conduct of investigat­ion was appropriat­e.
