Court bid on Brooks

Ex-partner seeks violence order

- HELEN KEMPTON

THE ex-partner of Adam Brooks has told a court the former state mines minister had been intimidating her by going into her house when she was at work and watching her come and go from a nearby lookout.

Tanya Dennison has applied for a family violence order against Mr Brooks, who now lives in Queensland.

In Burnie Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, Magistrate Tamara Jago upheld an interim FVO and set the matter down for mediation on October 20.

“He kept coming into the house even after he moved to Brisbane. He would come in while I was at work and spend time there,” Ms Dennison told Magistrate Jago as she asked for the interim FVO to stay in place despite opposition from Mr Brooks.

“His visits were recorded and that footage has been given to police. And he would watch me from a lookout.

“This behaviour only stopped when bail conditions imposed in Queensland meant he could not leave that state. I fear he will continue to stalk and harass me if he comes back here.”

Magistrate Jago agreed to leave the interim FVO in place until “the matter could be examined in a more fulsome way.”

Mr Brooks’ lawyer Anthony Mihal said the former Braddon MHA’s firearms licence had been suspended because of the interim FVO.

“The respondent denies any wrong doing whatsoever and the allegations are very much in dispute,” Mr Mihal said.

Mr Brooks will be served with paperwork regarding the upcoming mediation by Queensland police. He was given leave to appear at the mediation via audio link. Mr Brooks stood for the Liberals in Braddon in the last state election and secured a seat.

However, he resigned soon after being declared elected due to firearm charges in Tasmania, which were later dismissed, and allegations he had used assumed identities on dating sites.

Mr Brooks has denied the identity claims.

Premier Peter Gutwein stood by Mr Brooks throughout the election campaign amid mounting claims about his conduct.

The Greens have lodged a complaint with the Integrity Commission over the Liberals’ handling of Mr Brooks’ preselection and election.

Mr Brooks, 45, is facing one count each of unlawful possession of a category H weapon, unauthorised possession of explosives, dealing with identity items and a breach of bail in the court in Queensland. Police allegedly found the items while executing a search warrant at a Marine Parade property in Redcliffe on May 12.

Police said a handgun and false driver’s licences were seized during the search.
