CHEF SABINA KEEN TO DO HER FARESHARE

- DAMITA LAMONT

FOODIE Sabina Newton is making 100 cakes in 100 days to retain her skills and, to keep the kilograms at bay, she will be raising funds for the FareShare Footsteps Challenge.

The 22-year-old finalist in the recent MasterChef Australia series and fellow teammates are collectively walking and running 100km from October 3-17 to fundraise through community sponsorship for FareShare.

The nationwide charity rescues surplus food and cooks free, nutritious meals for the disadvantaged.

After making it to the top six of MasterChef, with her final episode airing in July, Miss Newton has been busy back at her Sandy Bay home taking part in various culinary challenges, running catering projects and pampering her family.

So the FareShare Challenge has come at a good time.

“Working off all that food and all that butter is just what I need, I literally have been doing way too much cooking,” she said.

Having grown up in a household that valued quality foods, and having a mother who has instilled a lifelong love of cooking, Miss Newton said she was passionate about supporting the charity’s mission in improving health outcomes for the disadvantaged.

“I am a big believer that you can’t go about your dayto-day activities if you don’t have good food. Everyone needs the opportunity to eat well and to be around it as it brings people together,” she said.

Setting herself the personal challenge of running 50km of the group’s 100km target, Miss Newton said she was grateful for her recent stint playing women’s football.

“I played for the women’s league Division 3 of the Hutchins Old Boys team and we just finished the season, so hopefully (the challenge) shouldn’t be too bad,” she said.
