Carlton ramps up support for Voss

- JAY CLARK

CARLTON has appointed a new coaching and innovation manager to help get the best out of the Blues’ coaching panel next season.

The Blues have appointed former North Melbourne, Port Adelaide and Melbourne development manager Aaron Greaves (pictured) to their football department.

Greaves, who worked with new coach Michael Voss at the Power, will support Voss in a day-to-day role and help oversee the coaching operations.

Geelong has spoken to former Fremantle and St Kilda coach Ross Lyon about a coaching position, but the man who was the frontrunner to replace David Teague at Carlton looks set to stay in the media.

The Cats approached

Lyon about a strategy and mentoring role as the club attempts to stay in the top-four with an ageing list in 2022.

But the bid remains a long shot, with others also in the frame to help lead a new look football department.

The Cats have made a move for former premiership hero Harry Taylor for a football operations role and former star defender Matthew Egan for an assistant’s gig.

Greaves is a specialist in coach education and communication and will help ensure the Blues’ coaches are using the right methods to engage, educate and motivate the Carlton players.

Carlton also has a new-look coaching staff for next season with Voss leading a panel including Ashley Hansen (from Western Bulldogs), Aaron Hamill (St Kilda) and Tim Clarke (Gold Coast).

The next month is considered crucial as he and his assistants look to bed down a new game plan before preseason training starts.

Former coach Teague lost his job due largely to the Blues’ defensive frailties, which were exposed regularly throughout the 2021 season.

Voss’s top priority will be to stiffen up the back half next year in a bid to break the club’s eight-year finals drought.
