Georgian treasure seeks new owner

A SPRAWLING rural estate in Tasmania’s North has hit the market, with the expectation it could fetch more than $10m.

Calstock at Deloraine, considered to be one of Australia’s finest examples of Georgian design, is also thought of as being among the state’s most treasured properties.

The circa 1831 country mansion has played a prominent role in the rural sphere, the thoroughbred racing world and in the hospitality space.

Knight Frank Northern Tasmania partner Sam Woolcock said a recent renovation of the site had been comprehensive.

“The result returns Calstock to its rightful place as one of Australia’s most desirable country estates,” Mr Woolcock said.

“In the current market, the asking price is very hard to gauge, but given the demand for historical Tasmanian homes and given the scale of the restoration it would not surprise me if it exceeded $10m.”

The agents said the Calstock homestead was surrounded by 12ha of rolling pasture, and was only moments

from the Deloraine town centre.

“Calstock boasts perfectly proportioned Georgian lines and the sheer beauty of its buildings and grounds leave a lasting and alluring impression,” Mr Woolcock said.

“Its grandeur starts from the veranda’s elegance and entrance hall leading into impressive, yet not imposing, sitting and dining rooms, each retaining their own marble fireplace.”

The property’s kitchen flows into a conservatory space for informal dining and living, with dual studies or offices within downstairs areas that also include a retreat and bedroom.

There are three further bedrooms upstairs which have ensuites, with original fireplaces adding to the character of the rooms.

Beyond the main building, there are the classical stables and woolstore buildings, with two self-contained two-bedroom apartments featured in the woolstore.

Mr Woolcock said the stables were ideal for hosting events, featuring a fully equipped commercial kitchen, along with a dining area and separate lounge.

Calstock’s thoroughbred racing history is significant to Tasmania, as it was where two Melbourne Cup winning horses – Malua and Sheet Anchor – were bred.
