PAIR SETS SIGHTS ON STAKES

- PETER STAPLES

TRAINER Adam Trinder and prominent owner Wayne Roser are no strangers to winning feature twoyear-old races and at Elwick on Sunday they hope to capture the $100,000 Listed Elwick Stakes (1100m), one of the two jewels in the crown of juvenile racing.

The pair have combined to win the race with Mystic Journey and Mystical Pursuit, with Bello Beau their new kid on the block who showed his potential with an effortless debut win late last month.

Bello Beau took advantage of his inside gate to lead throughout to claim the Alexandra Plate at Elwick last month, defeating the previously unbeaten Gee Gee Jet By.

Trinder said the son of Brazen Beau had “come on” since that outing and he said he cared little that the gelding was a month between runs.

While he led to win, it might not be the case on Sunday, the trainer said.

“We took Bello Beau to Hobart to acquaint him with the track and when he drew barrier one, we opted to lead and he got the job done,” Trinder said.

“I didn’t want him to find himself buried back in the field on the fence, so he led.

“But I am confident he is a better horse with a sit, and he will probably get the chance to show that on Sunday.”

Jason Maskiell will ride Bello Beau owing to Brendon McCoull being sidelined with a knee injury.

Trinder has thrown his three-yearold filly Miss Tuppence in at the deep end as she will line up in the $50,000 Lady Lynette (1100m).

Miss Tuppence showed her class last season in feature races and this season she has won three of her past four starts, the latest in Devonport where she came from last at the top of the straight to defeat Bandinelli over 1009m in a benchmark 76 handicap.

“Our options with Miss Tuppence were limited because she is best suited to the sprint journeys, so this race will give us an idea on whether she could step up to the Group 3 Bow Mistress over 1200m,” he said.

She has drawn wide so rider Troy Baker will be hoping to slot her into the back half of the field and hopefully with cover.

Deroche is top weight with 60kg, but she has a rating so far ahead of the rest of the field, she gets in well at the weights and has the early brilliance to find the front from gate 10 if connections want her to lead.

Trinder also saddles up Miss Charlie Brown in the Thousand Guineas over 1600m and this is the race in which he expects his daughter of Myboycharlie to shine.

“I was happy with her preparation until last start where she didn’t run on as I expected her to in a fillies and mares race over 1400m in Hobart. I thought she star-gazed in the home straight and Brendon (McCoull) reported that after the race, so I’m hoping stepping up to 1600m and having had that run on the Elwick track will help her improve,” he said.
