Howrah fends off determined Orford challenge

TOP team Howrah struggled to overcome a determined Orford on the grass at Howrah as the Thursday Women’s Division 1 Pennant resumed after the Christmas break.

Sandra Hawksley’s rink of Sally Ridgeway, Dianne Walch and Shirley Calvert led the way for the home side with a 23-12 win over Elaine Taylor.

Hawksley was the only winning rink for Howrah, with Orford’s Jenny Martyn defeating Rosie Geeves by one shot and Carol Bannister beating Charon Foster 16-15.

However, it was enough for Howrah to hold on to an 8-4 win by nine shots.

In the closest game of the round, Sorell held on against a valiant Claremont to win 9-3 by five shots.

Sorell’s Patricia Taylor stormed out to an 18-4 lead against Joy Voss after 10 ends, but Voss was able to recover to reduce the margin to six shots.

It was a similar story for Sorell’s Faye Gardner who was 11-2 up against Maree Morgan by the eighth end.

However, Gardner did not score for the next seven ends to eventually go down by one shot.

Sorell’s Vicki Philp and Jan McPherson played out a 16-16 draw, with third Janet Cowen drawing the shot on the last end for Sorell.

Sandy Bay registered a solid 10-2 win over Dover by 30 shots.

Playing consistent bowls, Robyn Leggett was ably supported by Anne Whenn, Jann Baxter and Jan Hobbs to defeat Dover’s Sheryl Phillips by 16 shots.

Jacqueline Phillips had a comfortabl­e 26-10 win over Dawn Garland.

Debbie O’Donnell was Dover’s only winning rink in a close match against Chris Down by two shots.

Kingboroug­h gained 10 points against Glenorchy Rodman with a 61-50 win.

Sue Clark, with great support from third Maddison Johnston, led all day against Rodman’s Debbie Stearnes to win 26-17.

With great front-end bowls from Karlene Beadle and Judith Traill, Kingboroug­h’s Leonie Price defeated Roseanne McCann by seven shots.

Crystal Brooks secured two points for Rodman with a 21-16 win over Vicki Bannister.

Buckingham defeated Rosny Park 10-2 by 14 shots.

Christine Thompson beat Gaylene Ridgeway by 10 shots and June Guy secured a 25-19 win over Judith Sherrin, while Rosny’s Ailsa Milburn defeated Jeanette Lane by two shots.
