Hoare smashes McSweyn’s mile record

- SCOTT GULLAN

OLLIE Hoare’s emergence on the world scene continues after he smashed the Australian mile record while pushing Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

US-based Hoare has been a revelation over the past 12 months after making the Olympic 1500m final in Tokyo.

The 25-year-old was the only runner to take it up to Ingebrigtsen on his home deck in Oslo, finishing an impressive second in 3min47.48sec to take down Stewart McSweyn‘s previous Oceania record.

“It was a special race. The Oslo Diamond League for

Australians has seen a lot of records set there, it’s just a special place and tradition,” Hoare said. “For me to go out there to represent and continue that is an absolute privilege.”

Ingebrigtsen, 21, just missed breaking Steve Cram‘s 37year-old European mile record at the Diamond League meeting with his 3min 46.46sec run.

“It was pretty intimidating but also awesome to be a part of. I tried to put pressure on Ingebrigtsen but he’s a lot stronger than me right now. I’m really happy with that but there is still work to do,” Hoare said.

Hoare took 0.89sec off McSweyn‘s record – also set in

Oslo last year – and he now moves to 13th on the miler’s all-time list, one place behind the great Seb Coe.

The world championships in Eugene, Oregon, begin on July 15, followed by the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August.

Australia‘s fastest man Rohan Browning was off the pace in the men’s 100m, finishing seventh in 10.28sec behind Canada’s Olympic bronze medallist Andre de Grasse (10.05sec).

In the men‘s 5000m Melbourne’s Jack Rayner finished sixth in 13min06.00sec while in the women’s 800m Catriona Bisset came seventh.
