Tavirun finally delivers

WHEN Tavirun arrived in Siggy Carr’s stable in December last year she was hoping the form Victorian would measure up in the major cups during the summer carnival but somewhere along the way the gelded son of Tavistock lost form.

Tavirun picked up the odd placing but found the tracks too firm for his liking.

But at Elwick on Sunday, he finally delivered the goods in a benchmark 76 handicap over 1600m.

With South Australian apprentice Lizzie Annells aboard, Tavirun came from midfield to hit the front in the home straight and went on to easily account for Vallabar and Skyway Star from the Scott Brunton stable.

It was his seventh start for the stable and found the soft seven track conditions to his liking.

“That was a nice win and one we have been looking for ever since he arrived,” Carr said.

The jockey said the gelding was always travelling like the winner.

“I thought we had them covered a fair way from home and while he might have hesitated a bit once he hit the front, but he still finished off strong and he definitely enjoyed the soft ground,” Annells said.

VICTORIAN owned and trained mare Nina Carmella made an impressive debut in winning a maiden over 1100m much to the dismay of bookies who would have been facing hefty payouts.

Nena Carmella was backed in from $17 to start the $2.50 second favourite, although she firmed into $1.90 at one stage before easing when money came for the Tammy Mollross-trained Tarkine Eagle that ended up starting favourite at $2.25.

The mare was ridden by Siggy Carr who urged her from the gates to quickly set up a handy lead and despite being pressured by Tarkine Eagle (Codi Jordan) 400m from home, the Tony Romeotrained four-year-old slipped three lengths clear turning for home and went on to win.

CONSISTENT five-year-old Yarra Master made it three wins in succession when he powered home late to win the Madeleine Ogilvy Benchmark 62 Handicap over 1600m.

Yarra Master is being touted as a major cups prospect with his trainer Scott Brunton likely to step him out to 2100m next month.

“Yarra Master is a very promising horse that gives me the impression he will be even better when he steps out beyond 2000m,” Brunton said.

The gelded son of Mawingo won his previous two starts over 1430m at Elwick and looked dour on Sunday, so he could be ready to take the next step.

CHAMPION jockey Glenn Boss was a guest at the Elwick meeting as part of the official Tour of the Cox Plate that is being taken to tracks all over Australia in the lead-up to the big race in October.

Boss won four Cox Plates and the last before he retired last year was in 2020 aboard import Sir Dragonet.

But the one he cherishes the most is his Plate win aboard champion mare Makybe Diva.

He also partnered Makybe Diva to victory in three successive Melbourne Cups.
