Hawks’ winning run keeps on going

- FRANCES REID

THE Northern Hawks continued their winning streak, defeating the Kingston Blues at the Silverdome in game one of this weekend’s Tasmanian Netball League double-header.

The top-ranked Hawks squad led from the first whistle and finished off the first half of the match ahead by seven in a score of 32-25.

The strength of the fourthplaced Kingston side challenged the frontrunners, keeping the scores close for the opening half, however Hawks’ experience eventually prevailed and they took out the clash 62-44.

Kingston coach Erin Baker says the team was pleased with their efforts.

“Our shooters were accurate and we were slowing down the play and winning good ball. It was really pleasing to see our rotations having impact. Our depth is growing, which is exciting,” she said.

Kingston lost momentum in the final quarter, with illness affecting its line-up.

“We were disappointed to fall away in the last quarter, we had put ourselves in a really good spot to steal a win. We’ve had some sickness and didn’t match them when it counted.”

Saturday’s win continues Hawks’ winning streak, with the team unbeaten so far this season, while Kingston was coming off the back of a strong win against Devon in round 14.

The double-header weekend also commemorated the 150th games of Hawks’ Ashlea Mawer and Danni Pickett.

In other Saturday matches, Cripps Waratah defeated Devon 50-31 in Ulverstone, while AYC-Friends Arrows and F45 Cavaliers battled it out to finish with a draw of 55-all at the Silverdome.

Cavs beat Cripps 55-42 at the Silverdome on Sunday, while Arrows took out Devon 62-34 in Ulverstone and Hawks triumphed over Karana 97-30 at the Silverdome.
