Perkins has a job to do on Cygnet forward

- JAMES BRESNEHAN

SORELL young gun Jeremiah Perkins will be put to the test against Cygnet when he shifts into the backline to “do a job” on one of the Port’s danger forwards.

Perkins would not reveal which Port player he had been assigned to, but it is likely to be either James Zeitzen or a returning Thor Boscott.

Zeitzen kicked two goals in Cygnet’s win last week over the Eagles, while Joe Direen led the charge with five.

Perkins said he’s up for the challenge.

“I’ve been shifted around a bit this year,’’ he said. “I’ve played up forward, in the middle and down back. I’m going back this week to do a job so, hopefully, I go all right down there. I’ll keep who it is to myself. If I can stop that player and have an influence on the game, it’s going to be good for our side.”

A strong performance against Cygnet could set up Sorell for its shot at the finals.

“We can learn plenty from a side like Cygnet,” Perkins said.

“They are the top standard of the competition and it’s always good playing against the top sides to test yourself against them.

“We’re definitely on the rise. We won five or six games last year, but the goal this year is to make the finals.

“Anything can happen once you get there. We’ve had a few injuries, which have hurt us. We need to stamp out lapses from our game and play four quarters of football.”

Forward Jacob Smith has been one player delivering week after week, as has Mitch Anderton.

“Jacob has been fantastic for us,’’ Perkins said. “He has kicked 12 goals in the last two weeks.

“Mitch has been playing up forward, kicking a heap of goals and applying forward pressure.”
