Premier assures abortion access

- DAVID KILLICK

PREMIER Jeremy Rockliff has reassured Tasmanian women that access to abortion will not be undermined after a conservative Christian MP made a foray into the controversy of the US Supreme Court’s recent decision.

Mr Rockliff told reporters there would be no change to abortion laws in Tasmania.

“Can I say to all Tasmanian women and Tasmanian people, please do not look at what’s happening in the US and think that that could ever happen here.

“We have legislation here in Tasmania, we have equity of access for women’s reproductive health services in Tasmania, irrespective of which region you live in Tasmania, and that will not change.”

The Premier’s comments came after Braddon MP Felix Ellis posted about the topic on his Facebook page.

“Finding out you’re unexpectedly pregnant is often a joyous time but it can be difficult,” Mr Ellis wrote.

“The recent discussion about abortion laws in America has also been distressing. If this is you, it’s important to know that you’re not alone.

“While abortion is legal in Tasmania, there are other options for women and families.

“Support is available, whether you need counselling, financial assistance, social services or information about adoption families.”

Labor’s Sarah Lovell said the comments were insensitive.

“What’s been happening in the US with Roe v Wade is a very stark reminder for Tasmanians that it was not that long ago that Tasmania women had to fight very, very hard for the right to a legal health procedure here in Tasmania,” she said.

“To hear somebody like Felix Ellis talk about how distressing it is … and follow that up with comments like he did, just demonstrates that he is completely out of touch.”
