Chargers spirit lifts

- JARROD LAWLER

AFTER their first win of a tough season the Hobart Chargers women's side say they’ll continue to focus on building a team for the future while also trying to spoil their opponents’ finals hopes in the remainder of the NBL1 South season.

After defeating Dandenong last week to end its run of 12 straight losses the Chargers are hopeful the spirit-lifting victory will give them an injection of belief as they look to finish the season on a high “The girls have done a fantastic job of keeping that positive mind frame and even though we racked up 12 losses they stuck together and stayed positive and stayed to the task and we got the reward for that on Friday and hopefully there’s a few more to come,” coach Dwain Davie said.

“It was a bit of a pressure release and to their credit they’ve come to training this week and the intensity has gone to another level again so we are really excited about what that might mean over the next few games.

“Hopefully they’ve got the taste of walking off with everyone giving you a pat on the back for winning now and we can get a few more of them.”

Ahead of their road trip against Nunawading (10-4) and Frankston (4-9) on the weekend Davie said his side would look to be party poopers for the remainder of the season.

“Our message over the next couple of weeks will certainly be around us playing some teams that have got everything to play for whereas we have nothing to lose,” Davie said.

“We’ll be taking that mindset in and everything we do from here is about building for next year and the future.

“We want to show our supporters and the club and sponsors we are heading in the right direction and the hard work we’ve done hasn’t been for nothing.”

“To get that win and give the girls that affirmation and to show them and let them feel they are heading in the right direction is really important and hopefully we can get a

couple more wins to really hammer that home.”

The Chargers will tip off against Nunawading (10-4) on Saturday night before facing Frankston on Sunday afternoon.
