Hawks’ intensity, pressure too much

- FRANCES READ

THE Northern Hawks have prevailed over AYC-Friends Arrows at the Silverdome in Launceston in the last double header weekend of the Tasmanian Netball League season before the commencement of finals.

The unbeaten Hawks side utilised their strength through the midcourt and accurate shooting in attack to lead from the start.

They particularly made their mark in the second half of the match, breaking away to extend the margin to 48-30 at three-quarter time before powering home to take out the clash in an impressive score of 70-40.

Head coach Kellie Woolnough highlighted the coherency of the squad throughout the match, and praised the tenacity of players in all areas across the court.

“We focused on intensity and full-court defensive pressure. The defence end provided opportunities and we were able to capitalise in our shooting circle. It was a great team effort,” Woolnough said.

This weekend’s performance further showcased the strong forward momentum Hawks have consistently shown throughout the year, solidifying their place as the main contender for the 2022 premiership.

For Arrows, this weekend’s loss pushed the squad down one spot to fifth position, despite convincing wins in recent games.

In other Saturday games, the Kingston Blues overcame sixth-placed Devon 49-23 at St Brendan-Shaw College to move into fourth position on the ladder, while the secondplaced F45 Cavaliers triumphed over the seventhranked Karana Flames in a score of 69-42 at the Silverdome.

Hawks continued their winning streak on Sunday, defeating Cripps 58-53, while Cavs took out Kingston 56-39 at the Silverdome. Devon also defeated Karana 57-41 at St Brendan-Shaw College.
