Cornelius back to boost Magpies

GLENORCHY coach Aaron Cornelius is back in the hot seat this week for the club’s Pride Cup day clash with North Hobart at KGV on Saturday and skipper Josh Arnold says “AC” is the man to dig the Magpies out of their hole.

Winless after 16 rounds and at times struggling to put teams on the park, the Pies are fielding their youngest senior team in the history of the club.

While Cornelius had a few weeks in the USA visiting his wife’s family, Arnold stepped into the breach to help lead the fledgling Pies as captain and coach.

“It has been a difficult season for everyone at the footy club but I have really enjoyed coming through with all of the young guys and being able to give back and help the next crop with some of my knowledge and help the next crop of Glenorchy players coming through,” Arnold said.

Glenorchy and Cornelius are in discussions about continuing as coach next year, as well as retaining its playing list and adding to it next season. “Discussions have been positive and I’d like to see him at the footy club next year and I’m hoping that gets done,” Arnold said.

Arnold is a senior coach in the making and enjoys learning from Cornelius and former AFL player, Glenorchy premiership player and coach Ben Beams.

“Beamsy came back to the club and gave us a hand,” Arnold said.

“He’s coached in his own right at this level and at the lower level, so having someone who has been in that role before to bounce ideas off and get a better understanding from, that has been really good. Overall, I’ve really enjoyed the past few weeks. It has given me an opportunity to get my teeth into it.”

North Hobart is one slot above Glenorchy on the ladder, making it an opportunity for the Pies to post their first win.

“A win would be great, but we just need to do the right things and tick some boxes,” Arnold said. “When we played Clarence we were pretty good for three quarters, and we’ve had a couple of good weeks on the track so we’re pretty excited coming into this week.”
