Police probe rugby incident
A TASMANIAN rugby union player has been provisionally suspended from the competition and a police investigation has been opened after what commentators described as a “despicable” kick to the head of a downed opponent which sparked a brawl.
The incident occurred on July 23 in the premiership game between the Taroona Penguins and Devonport Bulls at Rugby Park in New Town. No charges have been laid. Early in the second half a Taroona back charged on to a short ball and was brought down in a tackle, before a Devonport forward playing in jersey number 17 – who was not the player listed on the team sheet published online before the game – led into the back with his head.
The floored Taroona man, lying flat on his back, reacted to the indiscretion with some words and a little slap. Number 17 took exception to this and wound up with a kick to the back of the back’s head.
“Oh my lord,” the commentator for the match said in reaction to the kick.
“Oh dear, far out. So the Devonport player just kicked (the Taroona back) in the head in front of the referee.”
The Taroona player remained on the ground as he received treatment from his team’s medics. The offending player was issued a red card.
Tasmanian Rugby Union president Ebony Altimira said the Taroona player was hospitalised as a result of the incident but declined to reveal what injuries he sustained or his current condition.
She said both clubs were cooperating with the TRU investigation which is being conducted in accordance with Rugby Australia’s Disciplinary Rules protocols. Tasmania Police confirmed it was investigating the incident.
