TEAM TACTIC POINTS TO A GOLD MEDAL

- SIMEON THOMAS-WILSON

IT was an aggressive and perfect plan that came together for Georgia Baker to take out the Commonwealth Games points race.

The 27-year-old from Perth, Tasmania, put in a dominant performance at the Lee Valley velodrome in London to claim another Australian gold on the track.

Baker finished with 55 points, nearly 20 more than Scotland’s Neah Evans, as she won the final four sprints of the 25km race.

She said the Australian plan was to take advantage of the Commonwealth Games allowing countries to have multiple entrants in the race.

“Our plan going in was to have myself and Chloe (Moran) up there early on and we managed that,” she said.

“It was quite an aggressive race. We made sure that we were always up the front in those moves and then at the halfway mark we were going to see who was leading out of Chloe and I and then that person would go.

“I think that we raced really well, we had a good plan and it came together.

“There’s not many points races where you can ride with your teammates, it’s only every four years.”

A world championship gold and silver medallist, Baker said the win was big for her.

“It is really up there for me,” she said. “Last time I raced the points race and my job was to help the others, so to have the responsibility I wanted to make Australia proud.”

Baker dedicated the win to her late father Patrick, who died of a heart attack in 2015.

“Every time I race it is always very special and I think he would be very proud,” she said. “I always think of him … I know that he would be really proud and he would be looking over me.”

Baker will next take part in the time trial and road race.
