Aussies in action DAY 5

-

1. ARIARNE TITMUS Swimming

Ariarne Titmus will take to the pool in the 800m women’s freestyle final aiming to add another gold medal to her haul. This isn’t her strongest event, but can she close the gap on US rival Katie Ledecky who owns 29 of the world’s 30 fastest times in history with Titmus at No.30. Teammate Lani Pallister might be her greatest threat after a bronze in the 1500m at the world titles.

2. BRANDON STARC Athletics - high jump

The reigning champ missed last month’s world titles with foot injury, but that was more as a precaution to prioritise defending his gold medal here. He won gold on the Gold Coast with a 2.32m clearance, and leapt 2.35m for fifth at the Olympics last year.

3. MATTHEW TEMPLE Swimming - 100m butterfly

Forget Kyle Chalmers or

Cody Simpson, this man is Australia’s best bet for gold here.

This will be a tight race and any one of about five men could win it. South African Chad le Clos will be fired up after losing the 200m crown earlier in the week.

4. EBONY GORINCU Weightlifting

Ebony Gorincu was an accomplished sprinter and hurdler before taking up bobsleigh when she was 21. But after missing selection for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, she switched her focus to weightlifting and will compete in the 76kg class.

5. SHAYNA JACK Swimming - 100m freestyle

This is a stacked field for the Australians and it could be up to

Jack to complete the podium sweep. Olympic champ Emma McKeon and world champ Mollie O’Callaghan should fight for the gold, but Jack could upset them both if she nails the perfect race.

6. RHIANNON CLARKE Athletics - T37/38 100m

A silver medallist in this event at the last Games on the Gold Coast, Clarke was fifth at the Paralympics in Tokyo and comes in as a contender for another medal. The event will also feature Australia’s youngest member of the athletics squad - 16-year-old

Indiana Cooper.

7. NINA KENNEDY Athletics - pole vault

A shock world championship bronze medallist last month, Kennedy will be hot favourite to claim the gold medal here. She won the bronze in this event at the Gold Coast Games with a jump of 4.60m, but if she can repeat her world titles effort of 4.80m, she will be tough to beat.
