Time for a merry debate

-

I HAVEN’T sent many letters to the Editor this year; perhaps none.

In part that was because I felt I couldn’t add anything very useful to the discussions on local topics. I have opinions but they are mostly intuitive and not necessarily well informed.

Here are some examples: I rather like the idea of the university moving into the city.

It would mean facilities purpose built for contemporary tertiary education as well as some added vibrancy to the city.

I also rather like the idea of a cable car to the top of Kunanyi. It seems like a sensible, gentler way to provide access to the mountain.

On the negative side, I don’t much like the idea of an inward-looking monolithic stadium taking up prime land that has so much more to offer our community. People worry about the extra traffic that may come from the university’s relocation but seem unconcerned about the traffic associated with a stadium at Macquarie Point.

Where is the car park?

These three issues have caused considerable public comment and have filled much of the Letters to the Editor space and yet none seem to be fully resolved.

It is at this point that I want to refer to Christmas. One of many reasons I like Christmas is that it is a time when we try harder to be considerate of one another, kinder and more generous. We do many good things at Christmas; buy gifts for loved ones, contribute generously to charities and purposely set out to bring joy to our communities.

We can do it and we do it well. Perhaps we could resolve community issues with similar attitudes that allow us to work together towards the best possible community outcomes.

Happy Christmas!
