Cinderella with a twist

’Fun, comedy pantomime’

- ALEX TREACY

THE debut show by a new northern Tasmanian theatre production company will see Cinderella’s tragicomic best friend have to suppress his feelings for her after she falls in love with the prince.

Cinderella – A Musical Pantomime by Star Rae Productions will feature 25 local cast and crew members, including Ashley Eyles as Cinderella, Thomas Cross (Buttons), and Mitchell Trott (Prince Charming), at Launceston’s Earl Arts Centre.

While the evil stepmother and wicked sisters still feature in this performance, in the pantomime version Buttons is doomed to unrequited love after his best friend Cinderella has an “unexpected meeting” with Prince Charming.

“This production is a lighthearted, fun, comedy pantomime, with a hint of adult humour sprinkled in, suitable for all ages,” said director Racheal Leigh, the theatre and dance guru behind Star Rae Productions.

Leigh, who moved to Launceston from Queensland in 2021, said her company intended to provide opportunities to upcoming performers, as well as “give the audience a story they can sit back and enjoy”.

Eyles, who has just finished a week’s worth of performances with Theatre North’s Elf: The Musical, said the pantomime version of Cinderella introduced real-world problems to the tale.

“Cinderella is a kind-hearted girl who cares deeply for those around her, but her gentle nature is shunned by those who lock her away,” Eyles said. “And I want to express this by exploring the softer side of the character and delving into the importance of her strong emotional relationships with others.

“The story highlights her connections with her best friend Buttons and her true love Prince Charming.”

Cinderella – A Musical Pantomime is showing at Earl Arts Centre from January 19–22. Tickets are $35 and can be bought online.
