Kingboroug­h comes out on top after showing no mercy to Sandy Bay

TOP side Kingboroug­h proved far too strong for second-placed Sandy Bay in the match of the round of Bowls South’s women’s pennant competitio­n at the Kingboroug­h Indoor Bowls Centre on Thursday.

Kingboroug­h consolidat­ed its position at the top of the ladder with an emphatic allrinks, 45-shot and 12-point win, 85-40.

Sue Clark was the big winner of the day, defeating Robyn Leggett 31-7.

All four members worked as a unit, restrictin­g Leggett to just one shot after the eighth end.

Leonie Price played superb bowls to defeat Yvonne Buckley 29-15, restrictin­g Buckley to wins on six ends.

Sonia Martyn played a strategic game against Jac Phillips, and despite winning 11 of the ends played, Phillips could not overcome the multiples scored by the excellent team effort of Martyn’s rink, who won by seven shots, 25-18.

In a great contest that was not decided until the final end, Glenorchy Rodman beat Claremont on two rinks to win 57-54.

In the match that determined the result overall, Rodman’s Peta Bennett, in arrears at the start of the final end, rallied to pick up four shots to win 20-17.

Rodman’s Crystal Brooks proved to be too strong in her match against Joy Voss, winning 24-16.

Meekie Salter controlled her match against Rose McCann to claim an eightshot rink win for Claremont, 21-13.

Sorell secured an all-rinks, 35-shot victory at home against Rosny Park, winning 75-40. All team members contribute­d to the team success, with Janet Cowens winning 34-6 against Rosny’s Dianne Nieuwhof.

Kaye Upchurch had a hard-fought sixshot victory against Ailsa Milburn, winning 25-19. Helped by consistent play from her second, Shirley Hay, Vicki Philp fell in by a shot on the final end against Gaylene Ridgeway, sneaking home 16-15.

Howrah moved to second spot on the ladder with an all-rinks 71-54 win against the home side, Orford.

Charon Foster defeated Elaine Taylor, 30-18, Denise Tanner finished four shots to the better of Dinah Bennett, 20-16, and in the closest match of the day, Rosie Geeves fell in by one shot over Jenny Martin, 21-20.

At Glenorchy, Buckingham won on two rinks, Lyn Hall 22-17 against Leonie Hyland and Christine Thompson by one shot over Ingrid Makowski, but it was Cheryl Ann Nielsenbec­k’s 17-shot win against Bucks’ Jeannette Lane, 33-16, that ensured an 11-shot win overall for the home side, 66-55.
