FAMILY AFFAIR SET TO HEADLINE TRAP TITLES
IT will be a family affair at this week’s Tasmanian state trap titles with two generations of the Kenny clan set to shoot their way to glory.
Father Allan Kenny, 68, along with sons Christopher, 39, and Lewis, 15, will compete at the four-day event in Evandale with the action to kick off from Thursday.
The state titles, which will include competitors from King Island, will lead as a precursor to determine the Tasmanian team that will head to
Wagga Wagga later this year to compete against Australia’s best.
“We are all aiming to get into the state team in different categories and get the chance to compete in NSW at the national titles and represent Tasmania,” Allan said.
He has competed for more than 47 years with eldest son Christopher taking it up at 12 while Lewis has been competing for about three years.
“It’s absolutely spectacular to be able to compete with my boys and Christopher’s daughter comes as do other members of the family,” he said.
“I’m backing my boys to be right in the winner’s circle and I have great confidence they will take away some titles on the weekend.”
While Allan is set to compete in the veterans category, Chris and Lewis will face off against each other with both confident heading in.
“There is a really good rivalry between Lewis and I, and I think it’s great because it pushes both of us to be better every time,” Chris said.
“I’ve got the quick reflexes and the good eyes so I’m confident but they have both taught me a lot along the way,” Lewis said.
With about 300 members in the state and more than 295 clubs Australia-wide, the eldest statesman of the Kenny clan said the sport followed incredibly strict safety guidelines.
“We are blessed that we have never had a fatality in the history of clay target shooting in Australia and it’s a very well regimented form of sport,” Allan said.
The Tasmanian state trap titles kick off on Thursday and run until Sunday.
