Fix traffic

NOW that the Hobart City Council has resolved its position on Australia Day could it now put its efforts into Hobart’s traffic problems and other city problems.

Thanks for the lesson

I WOULD like to thank Phil Owen (October 24) for clearing up my confusion on the First Fleet arrival and settlement dates in Sydney and confirm that I probably was asleep in my history class, as at that stage of my life I rightly assumed that neither history nor French classes would play any role in my future working life. No money

I REFER to your Editorial (Mercury, Jan 23), Mr Albanese was not “on the money “in his comments regarding the development of Macquarie Point. Development has been progressing, albeit slowly, for years and has never included the monstrosity of a stadium...untiltheAFLsteppedin and ruined the whole concept. Joyce Burrows

Stadium riddle

WHAT’S the difference between a stadium and the Rockliff government? While they are both inward looking, only one is missing the Point.

Robo debt

THE robo debt royal commission is presently being held. Over 2000 citizens died, some by suicide, after being issued with wrongful, illegal debts. The silence from all media outlets is shameful. Many brave, traumatised victims are telling their truth and we deserve to know it. M.Ross

Find a voice

ON our ABC Professor Brendan Crabb told the Prime Minister to

“stand up” to Covid. Perhaps Anthony Albanese can find his

“voice” to mount a public health campaign for the most pressing health issue facing the country at the moment. A lack of new vaccines may be his nadir.

Rocky road

LIKE the state government they slide down the ladder of doing any good. The Hurricanes might get Rocky as coach and hope for a miracle like him.

Harry the ass

PRINCE Harry might have been described by a female conquest as a stallion but his recent behaviour likens him more like an ass.

Date change

THE change the date debate shows the government has the courage of a Nats. So we can expect Australia to go nowhere with the current minnows in charge.

Nowhere to live

MR Rockliff stated (Mercury, Jan 20) that Labor was cherry picking, do you see how we’re supposed to believe all the fake news that there is no one to work? PS: there are more than enough Tasmanians to work, just nowhere for them to live!

WHY spend millions on a pipe dream of a peripheral idiom.

Car ban

PETER Bowen’s letter (Mercury, Jan 19) suggesting we discourage personal use of cars reminds me that when in Singapore there was a ban on private cars with only one person entering the CBD. That was in 1976. Come on Hobart, catch up with the rest of the world and take decisive action to limit car use in the city. Peter Tierney

Poisoned chalice

WOE betide taking on the Australian Test captaincy mantle. Tread warily Patrick. Your recent predecessors, namely Paine, Smith and now Clarke, have publicity they would prefer not to have surfaced.

Time out

THE next time there is a massive traffic jam in Hobart caused by an accident, residents can be comforted in the knowledge that there will be a stadium as a temporary gathering place nearby.

Happy arrests

Greta Thunberg’s beatific smile at the end of her German climate protest (Greta cops heat, Jan 19) is consistent with the wisdom that action is the antidote to despair. I wish her, in the kindest, most grateful way, many happy arrests.
