NATION’S TOP SENIORS GEAR FOR TASSIE TITLES

AUSTRALIA’S best senior golfers will tee off today at the Kingston Beach Golf Club for the Men’s and Women’s Tasmanian Senior Amateur Championsh­ips.

Among the field of 105 competitor­s are 67 men and 31 women chasing the title in the three-day national order of merit event.

Key mainland competitor­s in the women’s field include Victoria’s Sue Wooster and Nadene Gole, and Gemma Dooley from the Australian Capital Territory.

Royal Hobart’s Lindy Goggin and Zibeth Daubenton are two local golfers to keep an eye on as they vie for the title.

As are Prospect Vale sisters Tammy Hall, the 2020 women’s Tasmanian senior champion, and Deidre Panton. Local members David Pretyman and Steve Lucas will be keen to leave their mark on the prestigiou­s men’s shield.

However, the pair are sure to face some stiff opposition from 2021 runner-up Robbie Berne from Prospect Vale. ROYAL Hobart Golf Club’s Joey Bower won a second consecutiv­e Open Championsh­ip conducted by the Huon Valley

Golf Club recently. The 22year-old captured the title and Bill Wellington trophy by defeating his nearest rival Dylan Backhouse from the Tasmania Golf Club by two strokes.

Bower carded rounds of 74 and 68 for a two-under-par total of 142, while Backhouse finished on even-par with 74 and 70.

Royal Hobart Golf Club’s Alex Bigg, North West Bay’s

John Ramsden and Tasmania Golf Club’s Paul Read all tied for third on two-over-par.

Tyler Barnes from New Norfolk and local member Andrew Grant took out the B and C grade divisions with 164 and 168 respective­ly.

Russell Day from the Smithton Golf Club won the Huon Valley Cup with a handicap total of 131 following scores of 65 and 66.

The correspond­ing women’s Open title fell to Royal Hobart Golf Club’s Anne Medlycott with a 10over-par round of 82.

Tea Tree Golf Club’s Kath Gardner won the Ladies Valley Cup with a handicap score of 69.
