Fringe event an enticing entree to music festival

- Tia Ewen

The Tasmanian Chamber Music Festival has its sights on New Norfolk to host its one-day Fringe event in October.

The festival previously was the mainstay of the Northern Midlands and Meander Valley since 2017.

Festival director Allanah Dopson said the event moving to New Norfolk, ahead of the three-day festival in Hobart, was designed for all the community to enjoy.

“Many who attend the festival fly in from interstate and enjoy the full three-day calendar of events, so we thought a day of activities would allow the whole community to enjoy a taste of what the festival has to offer,” she said.

“The day will begin with a concert by Sequenza who will be joined by the New Norfolk Motet Choir, while there will be an exhibition in the Barracks Gallery and at midday the Derwent Valley Concert Band will play at the New Norfolk Market.

“In the early afternoon there will be a concert by the Tasmanian String Quartet and clarinetist Andrew Seymour playing works by Mozart and Jabra Latham. In the early evening, enjoy jazz and refreshments while touring two major historic buildings, the Nurses

Quarters and Ladies Cottage.”

Derwent Valley Council Mayor Michelle Dracoulis was excited to welcome the event to the region.

“When I found out the Tasmanian Chamber Music Festival would be coming to New Norfolk, I was delighted because it is an excellent opportunity to showcase the beautiful Derwent Valley to people from throughout Australia,” she said.

The Fringe event in New Norfolk will be held on October 14, before the main festival moves to Hobart on October 20 to 22.

Tickets are available from the Derwent Valley Arts Box Office.
