Garland firm on independence … no deal with Libs
Tasmania’s newest independent MP says he will not be entering into a deal with the minority Liberal government.
After securing a deal from three Jacqui Lambie Network members, Premier Jeremy Rockliff’s ability to form government hinges on securing the support of at least one of the three independents – Craig Garland (Braddon), Kristie Johnston (Clark) or David O’Byrne (Franklin).
The Liberals won 14 seats at the recent state election, four short of what it required to govern in a majority.
On Thursday, Craig Garland said he had been in talks with the Premier.
“I can confirm that I did meet with Jeremy Rockliff last Saturday,” Mr Garland said.
“I raised a number of issues with the Premier, and he made some suggestions on the appropriate ministers to begin dialogue with on these concerns and key issues that I was elected by the community to represent,” he said.
“At this stage, I will not be entering into a deal with the Liberal Party.
“I have not been invited to, and it is my clear understanding the government does not expect a written agreement from me providing confidence and supply.”
Mr Garland said he was pleased with how the meeting with Mr Rockliff went.
“While we acknowledged that we may disagree on a number of issues, that will not prevent me from continuing conversations with all members of the new parliament.”
Mr Rockliff confirmed that he spoke with Mr Garland.
“I really appreciated meeting with Mr Garland, and I look forward to working productively with him in the parliament to achieve positive outcomes for the people of Tasmania,” he said.
David O’Byrne has said he would not sign a deal with the Liberals beyond offering support in no-confidence motions and passing budget Bills.
