Hey state government

LET’S GET MOVING

- Prepared by Tasmanian Automotive Chamber of Commerce

Bruce McIntosh TACC State Manager

The Tasmanian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (TACC) congratulates the Rockliff Government on its victory in the 2024 Tasmanian state election.

As TACC State Manager, I welcome the election announcement and looks forward to working collaboratively with the new Tasmanian State Government.

The Liberal Government has shown goodwill towards key policy priorities outlined in the TACC’s election submission, ‘Fully Charged’, but TACC reminds Premier Rockliff much work is still needed.

These are extremely important issues for the over 7,500 people working in the automotive industry within 1150 businesses in Tasmania.

I remind the government there are several policies that remain overlooked. These need to be addressed and addressed immediately.

TACC calls on the Rockliff State Government to:

• Support the Tasmanian retail automotive industry in its transition to zero and low emissions vehicle (ZLEV) technology

• Fund an industry supported and government led end-of-life waste tyre recycling solution

• Invest in skilling thin training markets

• Mandate the Tasmanian Motor Vehicle Insurance and Repair Industry Code of Practice

• Mandate roadworthy vehicle inspections on sale or transfer of ownership. There’s more to do, of course, but if the State Government gets these policies into place it will shore up a $630 million sector. That’s good for every Tasmanian.

TACC will continue to work with all sides of government to create meaningful reform that recognises and promotes the merits and key needs of the automotive industry amongst policy-makers.

The auto industry is a fundamental component of a well-functioning economy, and it’s at a critical juncture. With the emergence of ZLEVs and a longstanding skills shortage, industry and government must work together.
