Carr eyes Waters hat-trick

- Duncan Dornauf

Talented three-year-old Thespian Waters will be looking to complete a winning hat-trick when he lines up in the Monotone 3YO Handicap (1200m) at Elwick on Sunday afternoon.

The Siggy Carr trained and ridden gelding won a Class 1 in Launceston on March 24 before jumping up to Class 4 company to win at his last outing over 1100m on April 10 in Launceston, which impressed Carr.

“It was a super effort. He jumped from a Class 1 to a Class 4, which proves his ability. He tracked up so strongly around the turn that I was really excited to let him go. As he did, he hit the front and then waited for them. He still has a lot to learn,” Carr said after the win.

Carr is happy with how the horse has come through the run.

“He has been doing really well between runs. He has been much better than he did last prep, so we decided to run him in the Class 4 race. It was a lastminute decision to put him in that race as he had been doing so well,” the trainer-rider said.

The gelded son of Headwater has won three of his 10 starts and earned more than $120,000 in stake earnings after being purchased for $25,000 at the 2022 Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Thespian Waters has drawn the outside barrier in the sixhorse field for Sunday’s $30,000, which isn’t a concern for Carr.

“I would rather draw him in a small field. He can be that bit lackadaisy early, and as the others would, they would try and have the favourite boxed in. So drawn there, it prevents that from happening, and he is the type of horse that likes to have a bit of room. So, an ugly ride on him is probably better than a cute ride,” Carr said.

“It’s not an easy race. Jehbenti is a handy horse, and I have ridden Sandal a couple of times. I think he is a nice horse that gets in with no weight.

“We have got to carry the (59kg) weight that he has earned, but I wouldn’t be swapping, that’s for sure.”

Carr said she would be guided by Sunday’s race as to whether connections will press on for the $50,000 Autumn Classic in Hobart on May 12.

This Sunday’s meeting will be the last for legendary trainer Gary White, who has four runners in action, with Better Than Banksy in the final race appearing to be his best chance.

GOOD GUIDE

Talented greyhound Raider’s Guide will head interstate after his impressive win at Elwick on Tuesday.

The Gary Fahey-trained chaser defeated Fast Minardi by 6.5 lengths, running a time of 33.47s, the second fast time recorded for the 599m distance.

Raider’s Guide will now head to the 715 at The Gardens (in Newcastle), where the winner of the final will collect $500,000. But to get there, he will have to qualify through heats on April 24.

Duncan Dornauf is also a race caller for Sky Racing.
