My Bathurst Top Ten
Christopher Morgan is the tourism operator of Abercrombie House, a Scottish mansion on the outskirts of Bathurst built in the 1870s and restored by the Morgan family over generations. You can take a tour of the house and grounds, or attend signature events such as high teas, theatre performances and jazz evenings in the grand ballroom. Here, Morgan picks his favourite experiences to be had in the region.
1
Take a not-too-hot lap of Mount Panorama, then come back to witness the incredible spectacle of any one of our incredible car races.
2
Enjoy a meal in a country pub in one of the region’s many villages, or drop in to one of our cafés and restaurants to savour our amazing seasonal produce.
3
Stay a night or two. We have the complete range of options, from five-star boutique hotels to camping grounds, and everything in between.
4
Go off-road on a day trip with Detour Adventures or Simmo’s Offroad Tours and see kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, goannas and other native wildlife.
5
Hop on the Explorer Bus and travel across 40,000 years of Wiradyuri dreaming and another 200 years of colonial settlement.
6
Bring a picnic to Shakespeare in the Gardens at Abercrombie House on a warm spring evening (it’s Romeo & Juliet this November).
7
Taste our boutique cold-climate wines by visiting one or two of the region’s pocket vineyards, and discuss the vintage with our vignerons.
8
Explore as many of our museums as you can fit in – there are at least 16 in our city and villages. Some are world class and every one is unique.
9
Dream under a clear night sky and visit Bathurst Observatory for one of its Open Night Star Tours to learn stories of the stars.
10
Visit Abercrombie House. It’s the region’s marquee historic mansion. It’s my family home, too, so how could I not include it in the list!
