“Around 20 years ago I invested in a rundown, turn-of-thecentury school house in the upper Hunter Valley in NSW. It had been on the market for ages. I picked it up for $85,000 with the intention of using it as a holiday home. And, yes, I’ve put in some cash (though not a lot), turning the place into a comfortable character home. Today it is valued in the high $400,000s. Who’d have thought?”

“As much as I would have loved a Tesla car, the price point and lack of a garage meant I bought the shares instead. In 2020 they rose 695%, topping out in January 2021, when I took some profits. Tesla is the world leader in electric vehicles and has a three- to five-year technological advantage on other EV manufacturers. It remains my largest and coolest investment.”

“An original 1976 Mark 1 Fender Rhodes electronic piano. It’s a classic instrument with a unique sound. Purchased for $1800, it’s worth close to $10,000 now. I’m always on the lookout for unique vintage gear that holds nostalgic and practical value with a certain niche in the community. A Theremin personally signed by Bob Moog comes a close second.”

“My coolest investment is buying an edgy, architectdesigned house in the Blue Mountains. Its roof is shaped like a wave, and the building is made of steel and glass to help withstand bushfires. It is next to a national park and rowdy kookaburras often provide a raucous serenade to the setting sun. It is also a building that turns heads because its shape and style are like no other.”
