Start/ inish Sennybridge car park (grid ref SN 923/288, postcode LD3 8RR) Route summary A good introduction to the wild mountainsides of the Brecon Beacons, with only a couple of taxing climbs (or just one if you opt for the shortcut)

1

Exit the car park and turn left on Defynnog Road, passing a pub and school on your right. At the T-junction, go right on the main road. Continue through Defynnog village, past The Tanners Arms pub and over a bridge, then take the first left (‘Glannau Senni’).

2

At the farm, keep ahead, through a gate, o!-road. Turn right on the road at the end, uphill. Continue to follow this road as it veers to the left and becomes more overgrown, then turns into a grassy (boggy) track after the last house. After another 0.4km turn right at a track crossing, through a gate, to join a (technical) tree-lined descent.

3

Pass through Llwynin Farm, then go left on the road. Follow this all the way to Crai, over the A4067. As the road curves to the right and you leave the village, go through a gate to the right of the church. Continue straight ahead as the trail becomes faint, along the field edges and across the moors, with a fence on your right.

4

Descend through a farm to a crossroads and go right on the tarmac (or, if you want a shortcut, go ahead on the tarmac, down to the A4067 and follow it left, back to the start). At the bottom, turn right on the A4067 for 1km. Just past a layby and before the cattle sign/lights, go left.

5

Cross a bridge and head uphill. Go left at the T-junction, up a rough track, following a line of trees. Turn left by a gate near the corner of a road (which you were on earlier). Follow this bridleway past an ancient hill fort and down to the road. Go left on the tarmac.

6

Turn right on the A4067, retracing your steps through Defynnog and left into Sennybridge. Pass the school and pub, then follow the road right, back to the car park.
