Hummvee proves you don’t have to spend a lot to get a decent lid. The base fit is round so it may not suit the narrowest skulls but the dial-tightened cradle can create a reasonably stable fit on most craniums. While the dense fabric bug-mesh attached to the singlepiece padding sheet is an airflow killer, basic channeling behind the centre vents means more ‘air con’ than you’d otherwise get (and you can always cut the mesh out if you want).

As with most lower-priced helmets, the protective hardshell only covers the top of the lid, not the lower edges, but that’s only really a cosmetic longevity issue and it conforms to all the relevant safety standards. A cutout over the ears means it drops down for good temple and occipital coverage too.

The single strap does tend to slide loose more easily than a double strap, but if you loop it back through it’s fine, and you get reflective detailing as a bonus. Although the peak is fixed, it’s well positioned and securely attached.

While the Hummvee was designed for urban and trail use, the back is shaped enough to hold a goggle strap in place. Three sizes and five colours should cover most riders’ preferences too. Guy
