Quick fix tips

Removing and fitting a press- it BB

-

1

Remove the cranks. The process for this varies by model, so consult the manufacturer’s instructions. If a chain guide is fitted, remove that too.

2a

Tap the old bearings out. The best tool for this job is a press-fit BB ‘rocket’ tool. Pull the tool through the BB, handle first, until the flanges snap into place behind the bearing. Then tap the handle until it comes out. Repeat on the other side.

2b

No rocket tool? You’ll need a drift (a stout cylindrical rod). Thread this through the BB and press it against the inner edge of the opposite bearing. Tap the drift firmly with a mallet. Repeat this at various points around the bearing’s circumference until it pops out.

3

Clean the inside of the BB shell and apply grease or thread-lock to the outside of the new BB cups. This will stop them moving around and creaking in use. Remove any shims from the new bearings and set them aside.
