TECHNIQUE TIPS

Remember these four basics to stay safe on potentially treacherous alpine trails

-

01 Look ahead

Chance has it that you’ll stumble across some tasty-looking alpine singletrack when you’re least expecting it. Don’t get too excited and forget the basics, though! If you’re riding the trail blind, then you need to look ahead. Scanning 50m to 100m in front of you will give you time to react to obstacles and help stop you coming a cropper far from help.

02 Feet irst

Be wary of rocks and lumps lurking in the undergrowth next to the trail, at pedal and foot height. Clipping one of these hidden obstacles is likely to end in disaster, in the form of an over-thebars crash. Be mindful of where your feet and pedals are in relation to the edges of the trail. This is especially important when you’re pedalling or cornering with one foot lower than the other.

03 Ready for anything

Being ready to make last-minute evasive manoeuvres is essential. Keep your arms and legs braced in a strong position ready to absorb any impacts, and maintain maximum concentration. One minute you could be riding through a grassy pasture, the next you may be descending a rocky cliff face. The challenges found on natural trails also extend to wildlife and farm animals, so watch out!

04 The buddy system

As much as solo missions are great fun, you’ll enjoy the trails more with your mates. Not only is it safer, but when you’re following a buddy you can see where they go wrong and adjust your line accordingly – it’s like cheating, but way more fun!
