SIPES

Small slots cut into the top of the tread blocks to give them some flexibility for increased contact and grip. Some brands vary the shape of the sipes across the tread.

BEADS

The sti ‘edges’ at the bottom of the tyre, which contact the rim and, on tubeless tyres, form an airtight seal. All tyres on test had folding beads, which allow them to pack down smaller.

SEATING

A tyre is ‘seated’ when the bead locates securely around the rim, resulting in an airtight seal (sometimes with the help of liquid sealant).

SIDEWALLS

The sides of the tyre, between the tread and bead. Making the sidewalls thicker or reinforcing them improves puncture resistance and support.

BURPING

Name given to the sudden escape of air from a tubeless tyre/rim set-up, due to high levels of cornering load pulling the bead away from the rim or a loose tyre fit.

HOOKING UP

Term that describes the side knobs starting to bite into the dirt as you tip your bike into a corner.
