Early MTBs used centre-pull cantilever brakes, as they were marginally more powerful than the calliper-style rim brakes (still) found on most road bikes. V-brakes (pictured), introduced in the mid ’90s, o ered a little more power, but still struggled in wet and muddy conditions or if the rim was bent.
